For the fifth consecutive year, Megabyte Ltd. has once again collaborated with University of Malta’s Faculty of ICT for ‘The Megabyte IT Project Award’.
This year’s prize, an IPad Air, was recently presented at Megabyte’s premises by Mr. David Galea, Head of Business Development & Marketing to B.Sc (Hons) ICT student Christopher Portelli for his Final Year Project entitled ‘Emotion-based music player’.
Mr. Portelli’s project aim was to build and develop a web-based music player solution that is capable of playing music according to a person’s emotions. The extraction of the user’s mood is done via a webcam, where the face is segmented and fed to an emotion classifier. Using a previously developed music classification system, a self-learning system is applied which adjusts its recommendations via users’ feedback, thus providing a richer user experience.
The annual award marks Megabyte’s ongoing efforts in supporting and promoting local talent in the ICT field. The award places emphasis on the commercial viability and adaptability of the project. Megabyte’s awarding system utilises University of Malta IT Faculty’s grading, which comprises 30% of Megabyte’s scoring, with a further 30% allotted for creativity and innovation and 40% for commercial adaptability, focusing on the practicality and realistic application of the projects.
Megabyte’s David Galea said “Christopher’s project stood out due to its strong potential for marketable feasibility and is a perfect example of combining two existing ideas to achieve an innovative product of immense value, with multiple commercialization options. Coupled with that, Christopher’s work ethic and attention to detail also contributed to our decision to award him this year’s prize.”
The nominees for the 2015 Megabyte IT Project Award were Mr. Brandon Birmingham, Ms. Dorienne Grech, Mr. Nicholas Mifsud and Ms. Charlene Mintoff, all of whom deserve special mention for their outstanding projects.
